CERN to Change Name in Honor of 70th Anniversary

New Name Reflects Organization's Evolving Mission

Effective April 5th, 2023, CERN Will Be Known as "Network of Experiments for Research and Development in Society"

Geneva, Switzerland, March 31st, 2023 - On the eve of its 70th anniversary, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) has announced a significant change in its name. Effective April 5th, 2023, CERN will officially become known as "Network of Experiments for Research and Development in Society" (WEB).

This bold decision reflects CERN's evolving mission beyond particle physics research. Over the past seven decades, CERN has expanded its activities to include other scientific disciplines, such as medicine, climate change, and artificial intelligence. The new name better encapsulates the organization's broader role in driving scientific progress and fostering innovation.

"As we celebrate our 70th anniversary, it is fitting that we embrace a name that more accurately reflects our current and future endeavors," said CERN Director-General Fabiola Gianotti. "WEB represents our commitment to expanding knowledge and creating new technologies that benefit society."

The change in name will be accompanied by a revised logo and branding identity. However, CERN's core values and mission remain unchanged. The organization will continue to operate the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator, and will continue to drive cutting-edge research in fundamental physics.

The name change has been endorsed by CERN's member states and the organization's scientific council. It will take effect on April 5th, 2023, at 6:25 pm, marking the date when the LHC's beams were first circulated. A special ceremony will be held at CERN to celebrate the name change and acknowledge the organization's remarkable achievements over the past 70 years.
